How To Deal With “Busyness”

Hey there! How’s everyone’s February going so far?

I nearly made an intentional typo with the title, because I want to talk about busy-ness, not business. *cough* I don’t do much with the latter. Busyness, on the other hand… Well, just read on.

Now, I want to make one thing clear. I’m not the best advice on this. I ain’t a pro at much. But, I’m just going to tell my thoughts on this regardless of how much of it is accurate, because this isn’t an essay or anything.

I’ll be honest. Life is busy. Especially at my age, it’s really crazy. There’s school, and then other stuff like music and dance lessons, and then me trying to cram in writing and reading and other fun stuff–not to mention studying to get my Temps and researching about work permits.

You’re probably asking, is there a way to slow things down?

Truth is, that’s not the answer I’m looking for. And if you’re a Christian like me, it shouldn’t be the direct answer you’re going for.

Why?

Because some things are necessary. Obviously, school falls into that category. Music and dance and those kind of arts and sports are extra, but those can be beneficial, and are a good experience to have. After all, you can only do sports for so long.

Well, the answer is this. I mean, you shouldn’t be wasting your time too much on things that aren’t useful (like videogaming instead of catching up on schoolwork or being with friends), but that’s not my point.

As a Christian, the most important part of the day is the time you spend with God. (Or at least, it should be the most important.) Now, of course, God is with you all the time, but I’m talking in terms of prayer time and devotion. Everyone has their own special time and place to do it that works for them. With me, it’s either the first thing I do when I wake up, or at least I get it down before really getting on with my day. And, honestly, I’ve found out that when I miss it for whatever reason, I can tell the effect. My day gets all jumbled up and I tend to snap out at everyone. Why? Because when I’m right with God and I’ve spent time with Him, then I tend to have a happier outlook on life. Just like plants can’t go long without water, so can’t Christians live a fruitful life without spending time in the Word.

Life is busy. And no matter what we do, unless we live a life of complete selfishness and/or laziness, it will always be busy. But the most important thing is to make room for God in it all. Why? Because He is more important than anything else. If you can’t make time to develop a relationship with the Creator of the universe who sacrificed His Son for you, then you might as well forget about everything else. This world, this here and now is only temporarily. Eternity is forever, and the things we worry about now are nothing compared to what is coming.

I finished reading Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis this week. One of the last few chapters was talking about that if we do everything as if we’re looking towards Eternity, and not about what our deeds might accomplish on this fragile and momentary earth, then we will actually accomplish great things. I know my paraphrasing is terrible, but I hope I get the point across.

Busyness happens. We can’t escape it. But we can make room for God–and we should! He is more important than anything else.

I’m going to end this with a quote from Mere Christianity.

“God made us: invented us as a man invents an engine. A car is made to run on petrol, and it would not run properly on anything else. Now God designed the human machine to run on Himself. He Himself is the fuel our spirits were designed to burn, or the food our spirits were designed to feed on. There is no other. That is why it is just no good asking God to make us happy in our own way without bothering about religion. God cannot give us a happiness and peace apart from Himself, because it is not there.”
― C.S. Lewis

I hope you all have a lovely weekend!

  1. GREAT post! would love to see more of this! Reminds me that I should be writing more stuff like this on my blog too (and in general haha.)

I also like to remind myself that besides devotions and spending time in the Word and prayer, my ENTIRE LIFE is a living sacrifice of worship to God. So in whatever I do, I am doing it for the Lord. It’s an idea that helps me keep going even when it’s tough.

    Thanks, Chey! 🙂
